When you call about a plumbing problem, describe what you can observe: which fixture is affected, when the issue began, whether it is constant or intermittent, and whether other drains or taps behave differently. Mention any water shutoff you have already made. If water is actively spreading, protect nearby belongings and avoid touching electrical equipment in a wet area. A clear description helps the dispatcher decide what information the technician may need on arrival.

Ask how the company handles diagnosis and estimates. Will the plumber inspect the problem before recommending a repair? Does the estimate describe labor, parts, access work, cleanup, and exclusions? If the source is behind a wall or beneath a floor, ask how the company will confirm the location and explain options before opening the surface. Ask whether a diagnostic or service-call fee applies, when it is due, and whether it is credited toward approved work. Policies vary, so get the answer from the business directly.

You can also ask who will come to the home, whether the work may need a permit or inspection, and how water service will be affected. For replacement equipment, request the make and model and ask what warranty paperwork will be provided. Clarify who to contact if a leak returns or a fixture does not work as expected after the visit.

Before work starts, read the written scope and ask about anything you do not understand. Keep a copy of the estimate, approved changes, and invoice. A reliable process makes the repair easier to evaluate later and reduces confusion about what was agreed. Avoid approving extra work based only on a verbal description when a revised written scope can be provided.
